So, like I mentioned the other day in my BBQ cupcakes shoutout post, I’ve been looking for grill recipes and other delicious 4th of July food to make. I don’t really want to do just the typical hamburgers, hotdogs, potato, and macaroni salads. I mean, I don’t mind making them, but I want a new spin on them. New flavors. I like to try new things and when cooking for others, I love to see them go from uncertainty before eating to their eyes lighting up as they mow down on the delicious things I’ve made.

I’ve come up with a lot of ideas for some potentially incredible 4th of July food, but I couldn’t shake the idea of those fun cupcakes. So yesterday, I got busy in the kitchen and whipped up these easy patriotic cupcakes with a surprise in the middle, which is sure to be a hit!

4th of July Food - Easy Patriotic Cupcakes

Have you seen any of those neat cakes that have a shape in them when you cut them open? Like you cut a slice and there’s a green Christmas tree in the middle of your yellow cake? Those always looked so complicated to me until I tried doing it myself, and seriously, they are easy!

It’s as simple as a cookie-cutter; a star-shaped cookie cutter in this case. Grab your food coloring and baking supplies because you’re going to be the star person at your BBQ if you show up with these easy patriotic cupcakes!

4th of July Food – Easy Patriotic Cupcakes2015-09-08 08:18:53 Red, White, and Blue cupcakes with a surprise star in the middle that will be the hit at any patriotic event!


  1. 1/2 C unsalted butter, room temp
  2. 2 egg whites
  3. 2 eggs
  4. 2 C flour
  5. 1 tsp baking powder
  6. 1/2 tsp salt
  7. 1/4 baking soda
  8. 3/4 C buttermilk
  9. 1 1/2 C sugar
  10. 1 tsp vanilla
  11. Red and Blue gel food coloring

Frosting Ingredients

  1. 1 C unsalted butter, softened
  2. 3 C powdered sugar
  3. 1 tsp vanilla
  4. 3/4 C heavy cream
  5. Red and Blue gel food coloring

White Star

  1. -Spoon the white batter onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 24 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  2. -Allow to completely cool.
  3. -Using a small star cookie cutter and cut out the stars for the cupcakes.

Cupcakes Directions

  1. -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. -Line the cupcake pan with paper liners.
  3. -Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda together in a bowl.
  4. -Beat butter on high for 30 seconds.
  5. -Add sugar and vanilla extract to the butter until well combined.
  6. -Add egg whites, one at a time, mixing after each.
  7. -Add eggs, one at a time, mixing after each.
  8. -Add 1/3 C flour mixture to the wet mixture followed by adding 1/3 C of the buttermilk; add 1/3 C flour mixture again then add 1/3 C buttermilk mix on low speed, add 1/3 C of flour and add the rest of 1/3 C of buttermilk mix in low speed until thoroughly blended.
  9. -Divide the batter into three bowls…. add red gel food coloring to one…. add blue gel food coloring to the second and the third remains white. Stir well.
  10. -Begin by spooning in some of the red batters and then the blue… using a spoon swirl the two colors together.
  11. -Place your star in the center and build the cupcake…. continue with the blue batter then the red batter…. using a spoon swirl the two colors together.
  12. -The batter should reach 2/3rds of the top of the lined cupcake holders.
  13. -Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until an inserted
  14. The toothpick comes out clean.
  15. -Cool for 10 minutes.
  16. -Remove to a wire rack until fully cooled

Frosting Directions

  1. -Beat the softened butter on its own until smooth.
  2. -Add vanilla extract.
  3. -Add powder sugar with heavy cream into the creamed butter until it becomes a smooth and thick texture.
  4. -If the frosting is too thick, add more heavy cream, if the frosting is too thin, add more powder sugar.
  5. -Take a spoonful of the frosting and hold the spoon upside down
  6. if the frosting drops off the spoon add more powdered sugar ….
  7. -Divide the frosting into three bowls….. One bowl add several red drops of gel food coloring… stir well……Second bowl add several drops of blue gel food coloring…. stir well…. Third bowl remains white.
  8. -Scoop individual colors of the frosting at a time into a pastry bag… Start with the blue frosting, second the red frosting and lastly add the white frosting.
  9. -Twist the open end of the pastry bag to push the frosting to the tip. Test it out before applying the frosting to the cupcakes. The frosting should come out in a mixture of the red, white and blue.
  10. -Frost the cupcakes.
